MTI first began fuel cell research and development in 1990. That work led to a 1997 joint venture with DTE Energy to form Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ:PLUG), now an independent company focused on stationary fuel cell development and manufacturing. In 2000, MTI began to focus on direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). In March 2001, MTI MicroFuel Cells was incorporated.
