How long has Mesa Public Schools had a junior high school model with grades 7-9?
The district has traditionally used a junior high school model with grades 7-9. However, throughout the district’s history, other grade configurations have been used, including a K-8 and a 9-12. In recent years, 9th-graders have attended class at the junior high and high school. Dobson High School has an existing 9th-grade bridge program, and Skyline High opened with a 9th-grade class. The current state and national model for comprehensive senior high schools is grades 9-12. Research suggests many academic benefits for 9th-grade students at the high school, including access to additional electives and advanced courses, as well as the ability to participate in clubs and activities.
