How long has labeling genetically modified foods been mandatory in the EU?
EU-wide regulations on labeling have existed since 1997, when the EU regulation on novel foods and food ingredients came into effect. In 2003, the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the governments of Member States decided on a new regulation on genetically modified food and feed. This new legislation further expanded labeling rules, replacing the previous novel foods regulation.
