How long has druidry been practiced?
That’s a good question, and how you define “druidy” determines the answer. The terms “druidry” and “druidism” were coined in the 18th century by the forefathers of the modern Meso-druid movement. Our particular tradition, is a form of Gaelic Revivalism. Our Ancestors, like many tribal peoples, probably did not have a name for their spiritual practices- their spiritual practices are inseperable from thier cultural practices- it was just their way of being. This is what we strive for, and hence the proper name of our spiritual practice is “na Rian an Sinseareach” -meaning, The Way (of our) Ancestors, or The Ancestral Way. Within this tradition, Draoithe (druids) are recognized as a distinct professional caste within our cultural and spiritual society. They are the repositories of knowledge of ancestral culture and it’s traditions-and it is thier duty and obligation to teach the people the ways of the Ancestors.
