How long generally does it take clematis to grow up a lattice?

Like most plants you should give it at least 1 year to settle in and grow properly. In the first year most climbers will only put a little above ground growth on as they are making roots and seeking the water table out. Clematis like a lot of sun and water, give them plenty of TLC, which means proper soil, proper clematis food (liquid form) and at least 2 – 3 litres of water every hot day. Depending on the plant, prune back at the end of the year to about half its size for the first time and check in the spring how it buds, some Clematis will bud new growth from old stems, some from its root ball only, once you see which it is then you can cut back further, careful though in frosty weather as the tender new shoots can be affected badly by air frost, so if it grows from root, you may want to ge a closh bell to protect. Colours and flowers are varied, some varieties will only flower once a season others will continue with beautiful flowers again and again, always check the labels to see
