How long does the recruitment process take for the Royal Navy?

I applied at the end of October 1959; was told I had been accepted end on November, and joined up 5th Jan 1960. That was a long time ago. It takes time to check you out, and depending on your chosen ‘branch’, they need to get a ‘recruitment’ together. Slap In (naval slang for apply), you can always back out. But look for some part-time work meanwhile. My father-in-law and brother-in-law both worked as aircraft engineers. Both used their experience in the navy to get really good jobs on leaving. The 12 years I spent with the Andrew were the happiest of my life. France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Iceland, Gibraltar, Aden, Singapore, Hong Kong, Borneo, Maldives, Japan….ad naseum. And you get to take your mates with you! And you don’t get mates like that in Civvy Street. If I had my time again, I would be in front of you in the recruiting office! Good luck in whatever you chose.
