How long does the message on the signage work for?
This is a difficult question to answer. In a few cases permanent signage is appropriate, such as road safety signage like speed limits, slippery when wet and suggested speeds around bends. Unless we need to know the information, messages on signage tend to blend into the background over time. Some people may absorb it and respond positively to the request while others ignore it. If signage is permanent it must be maintained and not forgotten or it may become part of the problem behaviour (see ‘Keep signs clean & well maintained’ below). Temporary signage offers opportunities to keep a message fresh and to continue capturing people’s attention. Roadside mobile billboards, like those used in the Traffic Accident Commission advertising are a good example of how temporary roadside signage is used effectively.
