How Long Does Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Last?
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever A particular strain of bacteria present in ticks causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever. When an infected tick bites a human, the illness is passed into the bloodstream. Within three to 14 days of being bitten, the individual will begin to express symptoms of the illness. Such symptoms include moderate to high fever, headache, muscle pain (particularly in the calves), fatigue and chills. A majority of cases will also result in a rash that spreads to the legs and arms. Symptom Duration if Untreated If left untreated, the majority of symptoms will subside after two to three weeks. However, treatment is a necessity for any individual with Rocky Mountain spotted fever, as the disease is fatal for an estimated 25 percent of patients who do not receive treatment. As soon as a health professional identifies the illness, treatment should be initiated to minimize the potential for long-term symptoms or death.
