How long does returned check information stay on file? How do I get it deleted?
Each record submitted to SCANSM by a Member remains on the SCANSM database until the reporting Member indicates that the returned check is paid or otherwise resolved. When a checking account is reported as “closed” it will remain flagged on SCANSM until the bank notifies SCANSM of a change in status. Information reported to SCANSM may remain on the SCANSM database for up to seven years, or as otherwise limited by law. In the case of a dispute regarding the accuracy or completeness of the information, SCANSM may remove data sooner according to applicable law. The decision to delete a record is made by SCANSM or the Member who reported the data, depending on the circumstances.
