How long does puppy housebreaking take?

It’s not so much how long it takes, it’s how old the dog has to be before he’s capable of figuring it out. Ten weeks is way too young. Try teaching him a command that means to eliminate now. I use “hurry up” because it’s easy to remember. 🙂 Whenever you take him outside, take him to an out of the main traffic spot near the door, and just stop. Stand there, holding his leash, and say, “Puppy, hurry up.” Wait for him to start. While he’s doing it, sound excited and happy as you say, “Good boy, hurry up! Hurry up!” When he’s finished, shower him with praise. Even give him a treat if you have one in your pocket. Don’t “walk” him expecting him to pee; the new smells along the path will distract him and he’ll forget about peeing till he gets back in the house and you turn him loose… and he lets loose. 🙂 He can only hold it for about 2 or 3 hours, now, so take him out more often than that.

It depends on the puppy. when they’re little they just can’t hold it for very long so you have to go out often but if you stay consistent and go out every 3-4 hours, and keep an eye on them in case they have to go while it’s not that time, they’ll get there. 🙂 I adopted a puppy from the shelter a few weeks ago. he will be 8 weeks old tomorrow and he’s only had 1 accident inside but i am home with him pretty much all day and take him out a lot.
