How long does paralysis last in a dog after a adder bite?
My Golden Retriever was bitten by an adder 3 years ago (she was 3 at the time). The paralysis was immediate and my husband had to virtually carry her home from the walk – not easy when she weighed 38kg and he also had our other Golden with him – luckily it was only 10 mins from our house. From time she was bitten to hospital was 2 hours. We didn’t know what was wrong with her but the vet knew immediately. She stayed at the vet hospital overnight on a drip to rehydrate her and was also given anti-venom and a steroid vaccine together with antibiotics and antihistamine. She came home the next day with 10 days supply of antibiotics and piriton. She was showing signs of being “normal” after about 5 days. She is fine now – no after effects at all. HOWEVER – I was told at the time that Adder antivenom for dogs is apparently NOT licensed in the UK so a horse drug (in a smaller dose) was given. Because of this, we have to be so careful as she is not able to receive anymore of this antivenom se
