How long does it take to recover from broken thigh (femur) bone?

0

My son broke his femur when he was 24. He also had surgery where an IM nail is inserted through the middle of the bone. It is then attached with a big screw through the hip, and two screws just above the knee. Best case scenario is 3 months to heal the bone, and another 3 months to get the muscles back. That is the very best you can expect. I have never heard of being in plaster after having hardware put in. As far as I know, there’s no reason for a cast, if the IM nail is holding the bone together. My son unfortunately ended up having 6 surgeries, and 2 non-unions. For reasons unknown, his bone didn’t want to heal. After his 6th surgery, the bone finally healed. His recovery was long and slow, and took 3 years.
