How long does it take to paint a helmet, start to finish?
When I started getting really good at it, I could bust out a helmet a day, but that’s working it like a production line; you’ve probably got ten helmets on the go at once and you’re doing paint on each one. If you’re doing big numbers, you almost have to turn it into a production line, otherwise you’ll be working on the same helmet forever and people will get mad at you (laughter). What’s the difference between a $300 paint job and a $1,000 paint job? Mostly detail. You could have a really cool $300 paint job; it just depends on what you want. If you look at Troy Lee’s helmets, some of the work that comes out of there is just beautiful art, but some of it’s also just production line stuff.
