How long does it take to encapsulate or decapsulate data with Vanish?
If you have a high speed connection with low latency and no rate limiting, encapsulating data with Vanish should be pretty quick, albeit not instantaneous. Our Vanish prototype also takes steps to hide the time to encapsulate data with Vanish, such as pre-pushing key material for VDOs into the P2P network. If you’ve just started Vanish or your system, expect it to be much, much slower. To avoid frustrations, we recommend that you always wait for a few minutes (5 minutes should be enough) before you start using Vanish after an install or system reboot. However, note that Vanish builds on top of the Vuze Bittorrent client in novel ways. This means is that if your ISP is throttling Bittorrent, your ISP might also be negatively impacting the performance of Vanish. We do not view this as a long-term limitation; there should be technical ways of increasing the performance of Vanish in the future even under these circumstances.
