How long does it take to earn a law degree and how long before I am a practising lawyer?
The LL.B. program is 3 years full time. Upon graduation from the LL.B. program, all graduates who wish to practice and called to the Bar must apply to the provincial Law Society of the province where they wish to practice. The Law Society requires applicants to complete a Bar admission course usually comprising a period of articles of clerkship and possibly, seminars and courses. It should be noted that although a LL.B. degree qualifies graduates to apply for a license to practice, it does not entitle them to such a license, the granting of which is entirely in the hands of the Law Societies. The Law Society must be satisfied as to the good character and repute of its applicants, as well as their academic competence and qualifications.
