if u’vecut it up before you boil it it should take about 25 minutes after the 25 minutes is up pinch a piece between your fingers and if its cooked it should break apart really easy between your fingers, if not leave it for a bit longer

Uummm, I wouldn’t recommend any brassicas for soup, (that’s cabbage, cauliflower etc.) not a great idea, you will get alot of hydrogen sulphide, phew !! , and that’s just from the cooking. Also it will develop a limp consistency. To cook it to a nice state preserving colour texture and taste I recommend five to seven minutes boiling, and eight to twelve minutes steaming, don’t do both one after the other !!!! season with a bit of butter salt and pepper. You could then serve it in or with your delicious soup. Good veggies to put in your soup would be onion, carrot, celery, tomatoes, mushrooms, whatever you can lay your hands on, and use some split peas and barley which is available as a packaged soup mix. Of course prior to this you have got yourself some nice chicken carcasses or bacon bones to boil a hearty stock base. You will see that you don’t really need the cabbage so save that for your chow mien…..
