Methadone is an opiate-type drug, and being water-soluble may stay in the body about 3 days. Longer than other opiates like heroin, morphine, demerol or hydrocodone, because its stereoisomer resists metabolism and therefore stays in the system longer than the relatively few hours for the other similar drugs. Of importance is that different drug triage detection equipment may vary in their detection sensitivity minimum levels. This basically means that a person might pass detection using one machine, while another machine would still be able to pick up smaller residual amounts of metabolites of the methadone. Probably best to wait a week.
