Answer Hi there Maddy, The pelvic bones of a pregnant female guinea pig generally separate at some point during her ninth week of pregnancy. I think the average time of separation is around 48 hours. I have seen the separation take place very gradually over approximately 3 days in a number of guinea pigs, and on a few occasions I have not noticed it happen at all yet the birth progressed normally! I have been told by a breeder that when a guinea pig’s pelvic bones separate the birth is only hours away, however I generally find that birth takes place between 24 and 36 hours later. Sometimes normal births take much longer, and on occasion they also progress much faster. As you can see, predicting the birth of a guinea pig litter is far from an exact science!
