How long does an Active Top Secret Security Clearance usually last?
We have heard that an Active U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance is typically usable for up to 5 years from the date of first use, when one is still eligible to be accessing classified data and “In Access” (Actively using their TS) and then one needs a PR (Periodic Review) reinvestigation also called a Periodic Update. However we have heard that some Job Seekers employers delayed the 5-year update and let them remain in access for up to 6-7 years. We have heard that this delay of the Periodic Update appears to continue to allow classified access up to a point, but then can create problems sometimes when changing programs or employers after the program ends as then your Clearance may be considered out of scope, due to delay of the 5-year update.
