How long does an abortion take?
If you have a vaccum aspiration abortion, it takes literally 5minutes. Then they let you recover for about an hour and let you go home. If you take the pill to make you have a miscarriage (cant remember what it’s called), you take one and then go home, then go back there later, take another pill and you start to miscarry within about 2hours-ish. Make sure you think long & hard about whether it’s the right thing to do though – I had one last year & have regretted it every day since, even though I’m now 9months pregnant. The memory will stay with you forever.
There are 2 commonly used methods to terminate a pregnancy. An abortion pill can be used if an abortion is carried out in the first 9 weeks of pregnancy. This is called a ‘medical abortion’ as it does not involve any surgery. During a medical abortion the woman is given a course of 2 different types of tablets. After taking the first tablets, the woman will then have to return to the hospital or clinic 48 hours later, to have the other tablet placed in her vagina (like a vaginal thrush pessary). These drugs will usually result in the woman having a miscarriage within the following 6 hours. The woman will experience symptoms rather like a heavy and painful period. Most abortions before 13 weeks are by ‘vacuum aspiration’ (the suction method). A local or general anaesthetic is required. During a vacuum aspiration abortion a thin, round tube is eased into the uterus (womb), through the cervix – the passage that links the vagina to the womb. Suction is applied to remove the contents of the
The above answer from deano2886 is very accurate in its description. I’ll add to that answer by saying there are pros and cons to both. The medical abortion (pill), you do in the privacy of your own home but it can take hours and is like inducing an actual miscarriage. In addition you will have to go back for follow up within 48 hours. It is best if you prepare to take the day off and probably the next day or so after it. The clinical (vacuuum) abortion is a much faster procedure and takes about 15 minutes, with an additional hour for recovery time. There is slight risk of infection with this method. I suggest you go to a clinic in your area if you’re really certain you want to do it and watch their videos (they’ll make you watch them before you go through with it anyway) and of course depending on how far along you are will tell you whether you even have an option of choosing between the two. Just remember with a procedure like this that there are emotional ramifications that go far b
It depends on if the woman is having a surgical or medical abortion. The surgical abortion usually takes less than 20 minutes but, longer if she’s going under general anesthetic in a operating room because of being put to sleep and such. A medical abortion takes up to a few days because it’s basically a drug induced miscariage. After the contents of the uterus are passed she has to go in for an ultrasound to make sure the uterus has emptied itself. If it hasn’t she’ll need to undergo a D&C (the surgical abortion procedure) or something very much like it. After the abortion is complete it may take up to a few months for her body and cycle to get back to normal.
