How long does a transmission line last? What is its life span?
The life span of an overhead transmission line constructed with steel poles is estimated to be 70-80 years. The life span of an underground transmission line is estimated to be 35-40 years. The underground line has a shorter life span because the insulation surrounding the cable, which enables it to be placed in the ground, loses its insulating properties in that time span. Any portions installed underground will include conduits in which the cables will be placed. The conduits will enable new cables to be pulled into place when its time to replace the cables in the future.
