How long does a crown last?

0

Many years. With proper care, many crowns will last a lifetime. You can still have problems associated with the tooth as you could before having the crown. You can still have periodontal problems, and you can get decay on the root of the tooth down below where the crown fits. The nerve of the tooth can develop problems, and porcelain can break on the crown. So just because you have a crown on your tooth, you are not protected from all the evils of dental disease. Good maintenance is still needed to prevent crown problems.

A crown should last five to twenty years, depending on the material used, and many other factors. There are gold crowns placed in the 1940’s that are still functioning!
