How long do the symptoms of hives last from an alergic reation to food?
I always carry a Benadryl with me. It makes my hives completely disappear in 10-15 minutes. Strawberries are an infamous food allergen. WebMD and Mayo Clinic have good general descriptions of hives. WebMD refers to taking Benadryl to treat mild reactions, but does not say how soon to expect results. The Mayo Clinic article is even more vague. http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/hives-and-angioedema http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hives-and-angioedema/DS00313/DSECTION=1 The only reference to speed of symptom relief that I could find is in Wiki for diphenhydramine, the generic component of Benadryl: [Diphenhydramine] is largely the most effective antihistamine available either by prescription or over-the-counter, and has been shown to exceed the effectiveness of even the latest prescription drugs. Your symptoms can vary. The factors include but are not limited to: How severe is your body’s reaction, how many strawberries you ate, how much and what treatments you took (or are taking), your overall health, if you have other allergies and if there are any of those allergens in your environment, how long you normally heal, if you scratched and have a secondary infection or not. The extent of the swelling and if there are any hives or broken skin. Usually, if you have treatment (this can include prednisone), it can clear up in from two to four weeks, but there can be s slight sign of previous irritation for longer.
I had hives over ten years ago, and I had a real bad case. The Doctors I went to, could not figure out what caused them. It was very red, all over my neck and shoulders. My wife called the emergency room, when I first got them, and the nurse said if I had any trouble breathing, I should go to the emergency room right away. The hives can be very serious, so just keep that in mind!! Here is a link I found on a google search. Please see a Doctor, if you get any worse. I know some people that had the hives for a month or longer, but I think they usually run their course in about 5-7 days. I hope you feel better real soon.
