I think the maximum sentence is just a few months, which translates into a few weeks. However, I don’t think anyone has yet to go to prison (in the UK) for allowing their kid to play truant. Although there are laws stating that a parent can go to prison for their child’s truancy the school would have to press charges, and obviously it is quite costly to take someone to court, thus it is rarely enforced. If anyone has ever gone to court they probably have just got a fine. Although yes it is a silly law per se, I think it should remain because there are parents out there who don’t give a damn whether or not their kid(s) go to school. Many parents whose kid(s) play truant although I am sure they try to get their kid to go to school, as you rightly say they can’t stop them leaving once there, and schools recognise this and on most occassions would simply get social services involved.
