How long do male lions live if they are not hunted and are the biggest lion in their habbit?
In captivity, lions can live to be 25 or even older. In the wild, life is much harder for them – they must contend with disease, starvation, conflict with other lions, and so on – and they do not live as long. Males tend to have shorter lives than females – they can make it to 15 or so, but most only reach 10. This is because the average tenure of males with a pride is only two to three years – after this, they are ousted by younger males. Sometimes they are killed in the takeover, or die later from their wounds, but if they survive they are forced to become nomadic. Life is difficult without territory – they may be attacked if they trespass on another pride’s land, and hunting is hard for males because their manes make it easier for their prey to spot them.
