I don’t understand what you are asking. Is there one bulb or two, it’s hard to determine when you say it’s one light then you ask if you should turn one off and leave the other on. Either way your dragon needs the lights on 12-14 hours a day and off at night. The light that you need is UVA and UVB which can be provided by a house light bulb for the heat “UVA” and a UVB tube for the UVB or an MVB which has both UVA and UVB in one bulb. Here is a care sheet you can read for more info. I’m sorry erbear but the type of light bulbs you are reffering to are MVB “mercury vapor bulbs” which is exactly what I said and where in the world did you hear to only have a bearded dragon on an 8 hour day cycle and as far as you saying to have the bulb 8-10 inches away, how can you determine this when you don’t know what she is using for a basking surface, what wattage the bulb is, wether she has a glass or wood enclosure etc etc etc… She just needs to adjust the distance to get a proper basking surfac

I hope you have a UVB light on him as well. If you don’t get one right away. He has got to have that. Lights should be on a 12 hour on 12 hour off schedule or as close to that as you can get. It is important and the basking spot be 100-110 degrees. If you don’t have a digital probe thermometer, get one. They are great and so easy to use. Don’t let the temp fall below 60 degrees at night. If they do you will need to use a ceramic heat emitter or a red or black (could be purple) bulb at night. If I can help you in anyway just email me.
