How long did it take to make the ecosystem tanks?
It took about 7 full days to build them and about 20 field trips to colonize them. The lights were the hardest part because it was quite a job to drill all the holes in the brick wall that I needed to attach the metal brackets. The colonization process has been going on for about three months and has involved at least a dozen field trips to collect plants and animals from sites all over Columbus. Tremont students helped me collect organisms from the Olentangy River at Highbanks Park and the Park of Roses. I also collected things from the Olentangy at Fifth Avenue, the School for the Blind Park downtown, the OSU greenhouses, the West Campus pond near the OSU parking lot, my other ecosystem project in the Botany and Zoology building (at OSU) and from my own backyard compost heap. I acquired some insects from the OSU entomology department and purchased a few specimens from local pet stores and seeds from local garden shops. Tremont students also bought in some organisms from their backyar
