How long can I exceed the absolute maximum ratings on a RS-485 line drivers outputs?
The continuous bus output current of a line driver in a breakdown condition will likely be limited by package power dissipation capability. The absolute maximum ratings of +/-15 V are below the breakdown knee to guard band against process variability. Since continuous operation outside the absolute maximum ratings is not characterized, we can make no guarantees on its performance outside these ratings.
