How long can a person stay in the United States with J-1 status?
That depends on what the original purpose was for coming to the United States as indicated by the J-1 category. For participation in our program, we generally assume the category of research scholar, which can now be for up to, but not to exceed, five years. ORISE can prepare documentation to allow for authorization in one- or two-year increments, depending on the pre-authorized appointment period. We now also use the short-term category which allows for up to, but not to exceed, six months of participation and could allow for participation in another Exchange Visitor (J-1) Program later without the 24 month bar for repeat participation.
