How long before the Taliban resume control of Afghanistan?
If you put aside the patriotic fervour that usually accompanies this type of question and look at the facts in the cold light of day then Afghanistan becomes a nightmare. Believe me, having a son in HM Forces who has seen action in both Iraq and Afghanistan on 4 tours, nothing would give me greater pleasure than the demise of the Taliban by whatever means necessary. But it ain’t going to happen. Most of those within the ranks of the Taliban are neither Afghan or Pakistani. They are recruited from the radical breeding grounds within most Western countries and therefore provide an inexhaustible supply of new, fresh recruits willing to have a pop at NATO troops. Experience in Vietnam and Northern Ireland shows that you cannot beat the enemy you cannot recognise, a main reason behind the reluctance of many NATO countries to commit to the fight.
