I normally studied lightly for regular tests, maybe half an hour a day at most, for a day or two, if I knew what I was doing. For exams, it really depends on the subjects. I would start the week before and review what I knew until I felt comfortable about the information I was being tested on. I’m not sure if your teachers do this, but mine used to hand out outlines giving hints to chapters that would be on the exams, which made it easier to know what to study. Math and chemistry were my hardest subjects, so I usually studied them the longest. I’d go over formulas and equations until I knew them, and if I were unsure about something it gave me time to ask my teacher questions to help me understand. English was always my best subject, and the majority of the time the questions were simple. On top of it, we would be given a short essay to write on a given topic.
