How long are standard passport renewals taking to be processed right now in the U.S.?
I got mine renewed through A Consulate in a foreign state and i was mailed to my house after 2 weeks (the passports are only printed in the us which means that in this time they sent it all back and forth). They say to allow up to a month, but then again, the facts speak for themselves. Furthermore, if you are in a hurry you can pay extra to have the prosess speeded up. As far as I know there is no problem renewing the passport before it has expired, so unless you travel every week, i think you are on the safe side. before you go renew you passport have a look at their site for a list of the things you need to have when flying, it would be a pity to go all the way there only to have your application rejected, or to be fined 500$ for not supplying your SSN when you have one.
