How long after having sex do you need to wait before obtaining an accurate result from a home pregnancy test?

For all women it is different but to get a true accurate result my doc. said wait 8 days past the day of your period because you can get a false neg. But me I took a first response early detection test 13 days after I had sex & it already showed a faint pos. not a day sooner than 13 days though.
