In the USA that’s a matter of state law, so without knowing what state you’re in, there’s no meaningful answer. There are a number of sites that offer divorce law or information on all states. This site offers links to the actual divorce laws of all 50 states: http://straylight.law.cornell.edu/topics/Table_Divorce.htm However, unless you’re comfortable with looking up information, that could be frustrating to attempt. There are other sites that offer information about divorce in all 50 states, but if you go to google.com and search on Oregon divorce (replacing the “Oregon” with the name of the state your’e in) you’ll almost certain find some pages with topics like “what you need to know about Oregon divorce laws” or “Oregon divorce information.” It may take some looking. An alternative would be to call the Clerk of the County Court for the county where you live. If the person who answers the phone can’t answer your question, they can almost certainly tell you who can.

As far as I understand it, you are legally divorced as soon as the judge signs the papers. However, if one cares what God says about the issue, He says, “Whosoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whosoever marries her that is divorced commits adultery” Lk. 16:18. Even if one does get divorced, they are not free to marry another until their original spouse is dead (Rom. 7:2-3, I Cor. 7:10-12, I Cor. 7:39).
