How long after being infected with HIV can it be detected in a blood test?
Terry, An infection with HIV can take six weeks for detection. At 90 days, 95% will be positive. At 6 months, 99% will be positive. Initially the virus may not be dormant but it may be undetectable until there is enough to test positive. An HIV infection, even if positive, may not develop into open, clinical AIDS for a couple of years. When treated well, the virus may disappear from the blood and be undetectable or “dormant” while it waits in body tissue for the person’s immune system to weaken enough to allow the virus to begin to grow again.
