How “legal” are signed consents to share information with a third party?
FERPA allows disclosure of nondirectory information with a written, signed, and dated consent that specifies records that may be disclosed, states the purpose of disclosure, and identifies a party or class of parties to whom disclosure may be made. An example may be a student signing and dating a consent form for his or her instructor to disclose specific grade information to an honor society or potential employer.
