HOW LARGE IS THE GANG PROBLEM?
There is a concern in the country about young people and their involvement in anti social activities. Crime amongst young people is a major concern. However, we were a little surprised by a statement attributed to social activist Carlos Reid that there are 15,000 gang members in The Bahamas. He claimed that many of them were in a Haitian gang called the Zoe Pound gang. That was his statement on Monday 16th June in the Nassau Guardian. The next day, Mr. Reid seemed to have had a talk with Byran Woodside, the Minister of State for Youth who told him maybe that his figures did not look good. We were then treated in the Nassau Guardian to what seemed to be a climb down and a lot of stroking of what the Ministry of Youth was doing to help the situation. In the process, Mr. Reid praised the Ministry of Youth saying that at least they were trying to do something to help, unlike the situation before where the Ministry of Youth and Culture was dragging its feet for years.
