Zimbabwe was one of the last African countries to win independence and majority rule in 1980 because it had to fight a protracted and bloody war against the determined Rhodesian minority. Similarly, it has experienced five years of political, economic and humanitarian crisis because the Mugabe government has stubbornly clung to power. The Mugabe government has become a carbon copy of the old Rhodesian regime of Ian Smith. When Zimbabwe became independent in 1980, it pointed the way for South Africa to overthrow apartheid and establish a multi-racial democracy. Now Zimbabwe is a spectre for South Africa a warning that if South Africa does not deal effectively with the need to empower its black majority, it too could descend into chaos similar to Zimbabwe’s crisis.
