Treatment of yeast infection while breastfeeding is not different than for other cases. An anti fungal topical cream or ointment are used. In cases of vaginal yeast infection, vaginal suppositories and creams to relieve the discomfort are available. One anti fungal medication in use is Diflucan. It is an oral medication in tablet form, and only one dose is needed to eradicate an active yeast infection. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If there is yeast infection in your baby’s mouth, this is easily treated with Nystatin drops administered orally. To prevent yeast infection while breastfeeding, you may need to discontinue breastfeeding until your baby’s oral thrush has been healed. In the meantime, you can pump your breast milk into bottles to feed your baby. To avoid reinfection, boil everything that goes into your baby’s mouth for at least ten minutes per day.
