How is WCPSS handling the severe overcrowding experienced by many of our schools?
WCPSS is studying several options to reduce student overcrowding. Proposed strategies include the following: build new schools, add mobiles, cap enrollment, implement non-traditional grade configurations, double sessions and a mandatory year-round calendar at selected schools. Facilities Planning and Construction and the Office of Student Assignment are in the process of developing maximum capacity guidelines for all schools. These guidelines, once in place, will provide a formula to determine the maximum number of students individual schools can hold, when to cap enrollment and when to add mobiles. The Town of Cary is also taking a proactive approach to control crowding. Cary, WCPSS and Wake County drafted an agreement to ensure a balance between growth and school construction. Developers must obtain Certificates of Adequate Educational Facilities (CAEFs) from the school system before they can receive subdivision or site plan approval from Cary.
