Both paintings were painted in 1889, one year before Vincents death. Both paintings were painted while he was in an asylum for the mentally ill. Other than that and the blue and greens I don’t see much that they have in common with each other. Irises was done as a study of Japanese wood prints and lack the thick brush strokes that Vincent is known for and used in Starry Night. In 1987 Irises became the most expensive painting ever sold to that date, for just under $54 million. In 1990 it was purchase by the John Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, where it’s been ever since. Starry Night is thick with brush strokes. This painting has been in the permanent collection of MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York City since 1941.
