How is UNFPA working to make family planning rights and services available to all populations in the future?
There is an overwhelming unmet need for family planning options among poor and marginalized populations. In some of these communities, maternal deaths are actually on the rise. Working closely with its government counterparts, UNFPA promotes family planning as a way to reduce maternal mortality and provide dual protection from pregnancy and the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. We promote family planning using culturally sensitive and rights-based approaches. We assist in making contraceptives and information available in the language of our target populations and that young people are informed of their rights and family planning options. And we tend to find that when individuals have the information and services available to them they are grateful for the opportunity to have more options to plan their futures. UNFPA also works to ensure those who are already practicing their right to plan their families have continued access to services, commodities and in
