How Is Trochanteric Bursitis Treated?
The treatment of any bursitis depends on whether or not it involves infection. Aseptic hip bursitis can be treated extremely successfully by physiotherapy. Treatment involves deep tissue release of the bottom muscles and ilio-tibial band and a series of muscle stretches that aim to minimise the pressure and friction over the bursa. Releasing the appropriate muscles may involve deep tissue massage techniques, injections of local anaesthetic or dry needling techniques. You will also be required to follow a regimented home programme of stretches for these muscles. This may be followed by strengthening for the gluteus medius muscle (a large muscle deep within the pelvis). In some instances, orthotics (inserts to be worn in the shoe) may be suggested. This is generally a treatment of last resort however, even in situations where considerable biomechanical deformity of the foot exists.
