How is toxicity of pesticides measured?
The pesticide is fed to laboratory animals under controlled conditions. Toxicity is measured in terms of milligrams of the test material per kilogram of body weight for the test animals. The test is to kill 50% of the test animals. This measures acute toxicity and it is called LD50 for “lethal dose for 50%.” The lower the number, the higher the toxicity.
