How is the width of a right-of-way (ROW) determined?
The width of ROW is determined as the distance necessary to maintain compliance with federal reliability requirements and other standards, and is based primarily on the voltage of the line, along with its proximity to other transmission facilities. The federal requirements that direct the width of the ROW similarly guide the vegetation management procedures and configuration of the line facilities, including the height of the towers and the distance between structures. Utilities own and manage thousands of miles of rights-of-way, upon which electric transmission and distribution lines and access roads are sited. Pepco and Delmarva have in place and will have specific to MAPP formalized plans for vegetation management, periodic inspections (ground and aerial), and other protocols to protect and manage vegetation in the ROW.
