LONDON — A report is warning that Britain’s drinking culture is costing the country’s publicly funded health service the equivalent of $4.4 billion a year. The report says the cost of treating drink-related problems has doubled in the past five years and that around 10.5 million adults in Britain drink above sensible limits — putting an unacceptable strain on medical staff and health services. The Department of Health said in a statement Saturday that levels of alcohol-related hospital admissions are unacceptably high and it will help health care providers cope with the problem. The report was published last week by the NHS Confederation — which represents Britain’s taxpayer funded National Health Service.
