How is the West Des Moines Fire Department staffed?
The W.D.M. F.D. is a “Combination Fire Dept.” which combines career fire fighters with volunteer, on-call fire fighters. On June 4th, 2007 we opened a 5th fire/ems station with a 3rd career fire truck placed in service, along with 3 ambulances from the EMS department. A limited number of career personnel are staffed 24/7 each of the 5 Fire/EMS facilities. 5 stations are staffed by assigning 2 paramedics in 3 stations and 3 stations are staffed with 4 fire fighters each; 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Station #21 located at 3421 Ashworth Road has a staffed ambulance and a staffed fire truck. An around-the-clock Duty Officer/Incident Commander supervises the fire fighting teams. This team of public safety responders is supplemented by a dedicated paid-on-call workforce of fire fighters. The Administrative Staff of five (5) include the Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, 2 Fire Inspectors, Deputy Chief of Training and the Administrative Assistant. All full-time positions.
