How is the weight of large rocks and large animals like elephant determined?
Answer Hi Abhishek, The weight of large things is usually determined by weighing them. There are very large scales that can measure many tons. Large animals can be walked up on them or can be held in a sling to measure their weight. The same is done for large rocks as well. Also, the density of rocks is given in grams/cubic centimeter. This is called its “specific gravity”. This measurement is known for most rocks and, if unknown, a small sample can be analyzed and the specific gravity determined. In the case of a rock being too big to move easily you can find out what kind of rock it is, look up the specific gravity, and measure the rock. This will give you the cubic centimeters of the rock. The calculation then is a simple one. If a rock is 2grams/cubic centimeter and is 100 cubic centimeters in size then its weight is 200 grams. Hope this helps.
