How is the Volume Shadow Copy Service set up on a volume?
The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSCS) can only by used on an NTFS volume. It is also not intended to be used for operating system and boot sector retrievals. On Windows XP systems, the shadow copies are non-persistent – they will be erased by the system as space is needed. They are manually initiated by the user and cannot be scheduled. On Windows Server 2003, the shadow copies are persistent and can be deleted and scheduled at the user’s discretion. The Volume Shadow Copy Service is accessed on a volume by right-clicking the drive letter through “My Computer”, choosing “Properties”, and then the “Shadow Copies” tab.
