How is the upsurge in rural-urban migration affecting agriculture in the country?
Agriculture employs about 50% to 60% of the working population. The advantage in it is that, if agriculture employs 60% of the population, then it means that, people in agriculture constitute the biggest single internal market so that if they have money in their pocket, then you can be progressing by selling to them. However, if they are poor, then a big chunk of the whole market cannot be exploited because the people have no money in their pockets. Actually, agriculture is the backbone of the country because it account for 36% to 40% of our GDP and gives us about 50% of our foreign exchange earnings. It also produces about 10% of government revenue. 50 years ago, not many Ghanaians were migrating to the UK, but as the opportunities got better and better in the US and the UK and got worse in the 3rd world countries, migration began to occur and this is a natural phenomenon.
